Palo Duro Canyon: The perfect location for your texas engagement or couples session
I had the pleasure of photographing this couple who recently got engaged up at Palo Duro near Amarillo, Texas. If you haven’t been here before it’s like a mini Grand Canyon and one of the best places in West Texas for an engagement session. Palo Duro features hiking trails for all skill levels which makes it great for photo sessions with a variety of locations to choose from. The day of our session ended up being gloomy, with rain and dense fog. I was worried that it wouldn’t let up in time for our session but thankfully it did. While I generally prefer a warm, golden sunset for sessions, the fog was equally beautiful! It added a sort of eery look to the images. Because of all the rain they had early in the day, the ground was very muddy. My clients were amazing and willing to hike and trample through all that messy, red mud. We even climbed up the steep Big Cave in Palo Duro which was basically a muddy, slippery slide! But we made it inside to get those amazing shots!
Julie and Sebastian were a lovely couple and you could see how in love they were with each other and posing was so natural for them. We chose this location because they love the outdoors and hiking and it served as the perfect backdrop for them. We started at the CCC trail which has an amazing overlook. There is a giant dome rock at the top which allows you to see how large the park really is. We slipped the whole way up this rock but we made it to the top. Our shoes may have had ten pounds of mud on them but it was worth it for the views! We headed down the road after that to some of the lower trails and visited the Big Cave. That shot was definitely on the list and no matter how hard it was we were determined to get it. Her outfit choices were two flowy dresses that add emotion to the images. I love a wind-blown dress or one we can toss to add just a little extra to the images.
If you are up for hiking and adventure, I highly recommend Palo Duro for your engagement or couples session. There are so many spots within the park for photos and the colors are beautiful.
